Senior/Staff Quantum Engineer, Readout & Reset
IQM is a global leader in designing, building, and selling superconducting quantum computers. IQM provides both on-premises full-stack quantum computers and a cloud platform to access its computers anywhere in the world. IQM customers include the leading high-performance computing centres, research labs, universities and enterprises which have full access to IQM's software and hardware. IQM has over 300 employees with offices in Finland, Germany, France, Spain, Poland, Singapore and the US.
We are looking for a Senior or Staff Quantum Engineer to take a leading technical role in readout technologies, a core capability for quantum error correction (QEC) and scalable quantum computing.
In this role, you will drive the development of advanced readout and reset techniques for superconducting quantum processors, shaping performance across multiple device architectures. You will operate as a technical leader and mentor, influencing system-level decisions, guiding other quantum engineers, and ensuring that readout performance meets the demands of current and future QEC-enabled systems.
This position sits at the intersection of experimental physics, cryogenic microwave engineering, and software, with strong cross-functional impact across IQM’s quantum hardware stack.
What will I be doing?
Developing and advancing readout and reset techniques for superconducting quantum computers
Researching and improving mid-circuit and terminal readout performance
Supporting calibration automation and benchmarking workflows
Developing calibration and characterization routines for:
Measurement operations
Near-quantum-limited parametric amplifiers
Designing and optimizing qubit reset protocols to support QEC
Identifying performance bottlenecks and leading cross-team efforts to resolve them
Providing structured feedback on QPU quality to design and fabrication teams
Providing feedback on readout hardware to system engineering teams
Advising and mentoring quantum engineers at a project and team level
Contributing to regular calibration activities across device architectures
Documenting, analyzing, and reporting results in formats suitable for both technical and non-technical stakeholders
What skills do I need?
Strong background in theoretical and experimental physics, familiarity with recent readout-related publications
Deep expertise in experimental techniques for superconducting quantum circuits
Strong background in cryogenic microwave engineering
Strong background in software engineering
Demonstrated ability to independently solve complex problems and provide technical leadership
Excellent communication, reporting, and documentation skills (scientific and cross-functional)
Proven track record of mentoring and developing other engineers
Education:
PhD in Physics or a related field, or equivalent industry experience
Experience:
Minimum 7 years of relevant experience in quantum hardware or related R&D. This may include PhD/postdoc experience.
Nice-to-have
Experience with quantum error correction
Leadership experience in cross-team or multi-project environments
Publications or technical presentations in relevant fields
Experience with nonstandard readout architectures
What can I expect from IQM?
You’ll work on one of the most critical challenges in quantum computing: enabling high-fidelity readout and reset for scalable, fault-tolerant quantum systems. Your work will directly impact the performance of real quantum processors and support the advancement of quantum error correction.
You’ll operate in a research-driven, hands-on environment, combining experimental physics, cryogenic microwave engineering, and software to solve complex hardware problems. The role offers strong ownership, autonomy, and the opportunity to influence roadmap-critical decisions.
We are a fast-growing, international quantum technology company, where collaboration across design, fabrication, calibration, software, and system engineering is essential. As a Senior or Staff engineer, you’ll play a visible and meaningful role in shaping next-generation quantum hardware while growing as a technical leader.
