QPU Development Engineer
IQM is a global leader in designing, building, and selling superconducting quantum computers. IQM provides both on-premises full-stack quantum computers and a cloud platform to access its computers anywhere in the world. IQM customers include the leading high-performance computing centres, research labs, universities and enterprises which have full access to IQM's software and hardware. IQM has over 280 employees with offices in Finland, Germany, France, Spain, Poland, Singapore and the US.
We are looking for a QPU evelopment Engineer to join our QPU Development Engineering Team. This role will focus on developing fabrication processes and methodologies for quantum chips, as well as ensuring a seamless transition from product development to manufacturing. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including R&D, engineering, manufacturing, and quality assurance, to drive the new product introduction (NPI) process efficiently.
What will I be doing?
- Responsible for executing and improving fabrication processes for quantum chips in a research and development (R&D) environment, with growing technical autonomy and ownership.
- Participates in the development and implementation of fabrication processes for new and existing quantum processing unit (QPU) products, focusing on experimentation and iterative improvement.
- Contributes to the advancement of fabrication performance targets such as coherence time, qubit uniformity, and signal routing through hands-on R&D work.
- Supports Design for Manufacturability (DFM) reviews by providing feedback to design teams to enhance production readiness and process robustness.
- Collaborates with design, calibration, and process integration teams to address technical challenges through hypothesis-driven problem-solving and data analysis.
- Assists in drafting and maintaining documentation for new processes, including work instructions, procedures, and validation protocols (IQ, OQ, PQ).
- Analyzes experimental and test data to verify conformance to performance specifications and supports root cause investigations for observed deviations.
- Supports new product introduction (NPI) activities, contributing to prototype validation and resolving fabrication challenges during development phases.
- Aids in specifying and qualifying new equipment and tools in coordination with equipment engineers; supports development of calibration and maintenance plans.
- Provides technical support and informal training to manufacturing teams during the handover of new processes from R&D to production.
- Actively contributes to a collaborative R&D environment by sharing knowledge, supporting team problem-solving, and participating in group-based experimental planning and reviews.
- Identifies and suggests improvements to processes, tools, and materials, contributing to continuous improvement and team innovation efforts.
- Builds growing awareness of broader product requirements and business goals and begin mentoring junior engineers in execution tasks.
What skills do I need?
- Strong understanding of product development and manufacturing processes, particularly in microfabrication and quantum technologies.
- Knowledge of process development, tooling, equipment qualification, and quality assurance, especially deep silicon etching, TSV, ALD.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to analyze data and implement effective solutions.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of conveying technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and drive cross-functional initiatives.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
What can I expect from IQM?
- An opportunity to work with a passionate and diverse team on an important mission
- A unique opportunity to make a real impact on the future of quantum
- Growth and progress in a creative and open start-up environment
