Quantum Theorist – Open to Junior, Mid, and Senior Candidates
IQM is a global leader in designing, building, and selling superconducting quantum computers. IQM provides both on-premises full-stack quantum computers and a cloud platform to access its computers anywhere in the world. IQM customers include the leading high-performance computing centres, research labs, universities and enterprises which have full access to IQM's software and hardware. IQM has over 300 employees with offices in Finland, Germany, France, Spain, Poland, Singapore and the US.
We are looking for a Quantum Theorist (Junior, Mid or Senior level) to join the Modeling and Dynamics team who is based in Munich, Germany, or Espoo/Oulu, Finland, where theoretical physics and numerical modeling directly support the development of superconducting quantum processors.
In this role, you will develop analytical models and simulation frameworks to address key challenges in quantum gate operations, qubit reset, and readout, helping optimize the performance of quantum devices. You will play a leading role in connecting theory with experimental results, ensuring that modeling insights translate into real improvements in quantum hardware.
This is a unique opportunity to apply deep theoretical expertise to practical quantum computing systems, contributing to IQM’s roadmap toward scalable quantum technologies. You may also engage in scientific publishing activities, where this aligns with both company priorities and your interests and expertise.
What will I be doing?
Develop theoretical and numerical models for superconducting quantum processors
Analyze and optimize quantum gate operations, qubit reset, and readout processes
Model coherent and incoherent error sources affecting device performance
Perform analytical and numerical calculations (primarily using Python)
Contribute to the development of modeling and simulation software tools
Analyze and interpret measurement and characterization data from fabricated devices
Participate in cross-team projects as a theory stakeholder, collaborating with experimental and engineering teams
Coordinate theory and simulation work together with the team
Write clear and comprehensive technical documentation and reports
Support and mentor team members and collaborators in theoretical approaches
What skills do I need?
Senior Quantum Theorist: Requires a PhD in Physics or a closely related field, or equivalent research experience demonstrating advanced expertise in quantum theory
Junior / Mid-Level Quantum Theorist: Typically requires an MSc in Physics or a related discipline
Relevant experience in quantum theory or related areas
Expertise in quantum physics, especially superconducting qubits or quantum optics
Understanding of quantum gate modeling with coherent and incoherent error sources
Background in analytical and numerical methods for quantum systems
Experience implementing simulations (preferably in Python or Fortran)
Ability to work independently and collaboratively on complex problems
Strong communication skills and ability to explain theory to experimental audiences
Nice to have
Experience collaborating with experimental physicists or engineers
Experience supervising students or leading small research efforts
Knowledge of optimal control or machine learning techniques applied to quantum systems
What can I expect from IQM?
You can expect to apply cutting-edge quantum theory to real-world quantum hardware, contributing directly to the development of scalable quantum processors. Your work will help solve fundamental challenges in gate operations, readout, and qubit reset—key building blocks for achieving quantum advantage.
You will thrive in a creative and research-driven environment where deep theoretical understanding meets practical engineering. IQM encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and innovation, giving you the opportunity to explore new models, challenge assumptions, and contribute to next-generation quantum technologies.
IQM offers a highly international and collaborative workplace, where theorists, experimental physicists, and engineers work closely together. You will engage across disciplines, translating theoretical insights into actionable improvements and gaining exposure to the full quantum hardware stack.
As a rapidly growing organization, IQM provides the opportunity to play a meaningful role in shaping the future of quantum computing. Your contributions will not remain theoretical—they will directly influence real devices, real systems, and the evolution of quantum technology at scale.
