Quantum Engineer Intern, QPU Simulations
IQM is a global leader in designing, building, and selling superconducting quantum computers. IQM provides both on-premises full-stack quantum computers and a cloud platform to access its computers anywhere in the world. IQM customers include the leading high-performance computing centres, research labs, universities and enterprises which have full access to IQM's software and hardware. IQM has over 300 employees with offices in Finland, Germany, France, Spain, Poland, Singapore and the US.
We are looking for a Quantum Engineer Intern – QPU Simulations to join our Numerics team, where simulation and software tools are developed to support the design and performance optimization of quantum processing units (QPUs).
In this role, you will work under the guidance of experienced engineers and scientists to develop finite element, electromagnetic field, and other numerical simulations relevant to superconducting quantum hardware. You will contribute directly to IQM’s QPU simulation software stack, gaining hands-on experience in applying physics-based modeling and numerical methods to real-world quantum technology challenges.
This position is well suited for students or early-career engineers interested in the intersection of quantum physics, electromagnetics, and scientific software development.
What will I be doing?
Developing and exploring simulation models and numerical methods for QPU simulations
Working on finite element and electromagnetic field simulations relevant to superconducting qubits
Contributing to the development of IQM’s QPU design and simulation software tools
Writing and maintaining simulation software, primarily in Python
Following an issue-based, collaborative development workflow using git and peer code reviews
Participating in daily and weekly technical meetings within the Numerics team
Collaborating with related teams such as Design & Simulations (DaS), Coherence, and Modeling & Dynamics
What skills do I need?
Basic understanding of one or more relevant fields, such as:
Quantum physics
Electromagnetics
Microwave engineering
Strong Python programming skills and interest in improving software development practices
Ability to work independently on assigned tasks with support from the team
Attention to detail and motivation to deliver high-quality simulation tools
BSc degree in a relevant field, or currently preparing for an MSc
No prior industry experience in quantum technology is required.
Nice-to-have experience
Knowledge of numerical methods or optimization techniques
Experience with finite element methods or electromagnetic simulations
Exposure to high-performance computing languages (e.g. Fortran, C/C++)
Interest or experience in applying artificial intelligence to scientific or engineering problems
What can I expect from IQM?
You’ll work on real quantum computing projects that help shape the future of the field. Your simulations and software contributions directly support the design and performance of next-generation quantum processors.
You’ll join a creative and open start-up environment where learning and experimentation are encouraged. You’ll be supported by experienced teammates while being trusted with meaningful, hands-on work that helps you grow both technically and professionally.
IQM is a highly international and collaborative workplace, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds in a fast-paced R&D setting. You’ll work closely with multiple teams and see how physics, software, and engineering come together in practice.
As a fast-growing company, we give you the opportunity to be part of an exciting success story, gaining valuable industry experience while contributing to technology that truly matters.
